While official reports have yet to emerge, up to 50 people have possibly been killed in Sunday night gunfights across the city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas. It is believed the violence stems from an internal struggle between Cártel del Golfo (Gulf Cartel or CDG) groups. The Zetas have allegedly supported one group, in order to oust the other.
Citizens of Reynosa reported, by using the hashtag #ReynosaFollow on Facebook and Twitter, that vehicles were circulating in the city with the initials "CDG", "M3", and M4" on them. Apparently convoys of Golfos. The gunfights began around 7pm and continued for around 3 hours. Citizens stated that reinforcements from Matamoros came into town to join the gunfights.
Multiple vehicles were engulfed in fire and abandoned on major roadways. Citizens of Reynosa locked themselves in malls and stores, waiting for the gunfire to end. The military sent out troops almost two hours after the fights began, in a slow response to calm the streets.
The Zetas, which are based up the border along Texas, have long been at odds with the CDG since splitting from their leadership. The CDG has large numbers, yet lacks a strong structure. Cells have bounced back and forth from Zetas allegiance, causing internal battles over the last 5 years. The culture of handing every high school aged boy an automatic weapon and a CDG badge has backfired, as internal violence in Reynosa and Matamoros reflects.
The infighting is believed to be against "El Gringo" (pictured below), for control of the Reynosa plaza. The structure of the CDG has tumbled like dominoes over the last several years. The Metros group prevailed over the Rojos during internal fighting. Mario Armando Ramírez Treviño, alias El X-20 and Pelón (pictured below), is believed to have risen to the top of the CDG in Reynosa after the death of Samuel Flores Borrego, alias El Metro 3, in 2011.
It is unclear who is fighting who at this point, but many suspect it is between El Gringo (the alleged 2nd in command of the Gulf Cartel in whole) and X-20 (the leader of the Gulf Cartel in Reynosa and leader of the los Metros).

-By 1200 (noon) on Monday, news of the shootouts and deaths have barely made news in Mexico.
-Around 1pm, unconfirmed reports leaking that El Gringo was killed by X-20 and his forces.
-By 1400, only two confirmed deaths from local officials. A young boy and a taxi driver are those reported dead. www.radioformula.com.mx
-1430: State officials report 7 people detained, 2 killed, and 22 vehicles seized.
-Six cars stolen from Reynosa dealerships on Saturday, March 9th, are believed to have been used in the attacks.

MÉXICO, D.F. (apro).- Los enfrentamientos entre presuntas bandas rivales del Cártel del Golfo en la ciudad de Reynosa dejaron más de 50 muertos y no dos, como dieron a conocer ayer las autoridades tamaulipecas.
Según información difundida por la página web “Valor por Tamaulipas”, la información oficial no incluyó a las decenas de cuerpos de presuntos miembros del crimen organizado que fueron arrojados en una brecha de la colonia Villa Florida, donde iniciaron los enfrentamientos el domingo pasado por la noche.
Dice el mensaje:
“Reynosa – ‘Dentro de los muertos se cuentan más de 50, a todos los recogió el CO (Crimen Organizado) y los llevo a la brecha que se encuentra atrás de la cima y villa florida, que fue por donde entraron los Z, los fueron a tirar ahí, los juntaron a todos y de ahí a desaparecerlos, que no mientan las autoridades, quieren fotos de todos los muertos?? había armas, radios amontonados, por el oxxo tiraron gente muerta y heridos, para que los recogieran los CO para que se los llevaran para desaparecer”.
El usuario que escribió el mensaje ofreció publicar fotografías de su dicho pero el administrador del sitio y otros usuarios consideraron que no era necesario. Otros opinaron que sí para darle credibilidad al reporte, pero finalmente no se publicaron fotografías.
En las primeras horas de este martes continuaron los reportes de movimiento de grupos armados en Reynosa.
Un mensaje publicado a las 6:45 horas señalaba que a esa hora un grupo armado recorría el periférico, frente al Smart de Reynosa, a bordo de una camioneta Yukon, modelo 2000 negra con siglas del Cártel del Golfo y “códigos prendidos con rumbo al libramiento que sale a ribereña”.
Según los testimonios e información recabada por “Valor por Tamaulipas”, los enfrentamientos del domingo pasado iniciaron alrededor de las 20:00 horas cerca de un circo y un cine donde los asistentes vivieron horas de pánico debido a que quedaron casi en medio del fuego cruzado.
El enfrentamiento, según “Valor por Tamaulipas”, se debió a un “conflicto interno por el liderazgo de la facción del Cartel del Golfo de Reynosa, que la situación se venía gestando desde hace tiempo y aumentó de nivel cuando ejecutaron al M4, David Salgado, el pasado 15 de enero.
La PGJ redujo los hechos a un simple enfrentamiento entre “civiles armados” que dejó un saldo de dos personas muertas, entre ellos un menor, a las que denominó “víctimas colaterales”.
